Q&A WITH CLARE MACKINTOSH
Q: What inspired you to start writing your first novel?
A:I was a police officer for more than a decade. That might seem like a very different job to being an author, but I learned a lot about story from my time in the force. The detective investigating a murder is looking for the story the forensics will tell; the story shown on CCTV cameras; the story each witness will give in their statement. They are piecing together the narrative, weaving a compelling account to present to an audience – a judge and jury.
I learned a lot about people, too. Why good people do bad things, and the way bad people show flashes of good. I became fascinated by what makes us cross the line between good and bad, and a lot of my crime novels explore this ‘grey’ area. My debut novel, I Let You Go, is inspired by a real-life hit-and-run case which took place the year after I joined the police, and which I never forgot.
Q: What’s your favorite part about connecting with readers during events like this?
A:I write to entertain – to give readers a few hours of escapism – so it’s always wonderful to meet readers in person and have the chance to talk about books. I love hearing their reactions to my novels, but I also love hearing what else they’re reading. I’m always looking for good book recommendations!
Q: Do you have a favorite writing spot or ritual when working on a book?
A:I write mostly in my office on the first floor of our Georgian home. It’s a beautiful room, but it’s always cold and I secretly prefer writing in hotel rooms when I’m away on tour. Wherever I am, I always light a chandle and play classical piano music quietly in the background. It gets me instantly in ‘the zone’, so I’m not tempted to answer emails or work on my accounts.
Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give to avid readers?
A:Give up if it doesn’t grab you. I spent years feeling as though I had to finish any book I started, but life is far too short to read books we’re not enjoying. It’s not even a reflection on the book; sometimes it’s just a case of the right story at the wrong time.
Q: Who are the top three authors you read without question?
A:My auto-buy authors are Ruth Ware, Lisa Jewell and David Nicholls.
